FACTS ABOUT CHITCHEN ITZA
What you need to know about one of the New 7 Wonders of the World
Chichen Itza is an ancient Mayan city located in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and established around the 6th century AD. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 due to its outstanding universal value and cultural significance. The most famous structure in Chichen Itza is El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, a step pyramid with intricate carvings and astronomical alignments. The Temple of Kukulcan is approximately 30 meters (98 feet) tall. Chichen Itza hosts an annual equinox phenomenon during which the sunlight casts a shadow on El Castillo, creating an illusion of a descending serpent, symbolizing the Mayan deity Kukulcan. The acoustic design of the El Castillo pyramid at Chichen Itza is so precise that a clap or shout from the base can be heard echoing back as the chirp of a bird.
